24. What new thing is being birthed in you now?

“Have you ever read the children’s book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day? I love this book because I think all of us can relate to Alexander. It seems that nothing is going right for him, and he can only see his circumstances through a negative lens, where he’s the victim to everyone and everything.

He repeatedly tells his friends, family, and teachers that he’s having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, and he thinks he’ll move to Australia. I guess he figures that’s far enough away that none of his problems will follow him there. Then, at the very end of his day, he tell us, “My mother says some days are like that, even in Australia.”

Today, I am not exactly having an Alexander type of day, but I am feeling really down. I honestly feel depressed. And I want to share with you how I’m processing those emotions…and it does not involve moving to the other side of the world.”

“It’s crazy…Even after going through this process of spontaneous artmaking and responsive writing SO MANY times over the years, it never ceases to amaze me how the perfect message always finds a way to emerge from my subconscious brain.”

From my writing in response to the image:

“You’ve done it so many times before. You’ve come out and flourished and today is no different but sit there now and hold her in the pink safe place. It is safe there, you know? It’s safe to sit and feel and come out a little at a time. Like pregnancy, gestation, giving birth. She comes out SO ALIVE. Every time.”

23. Anxious, Confused, and Indecisive? Listen to This.

“How do you work through confusion to find direction and clarity after leaving an abusive relationship with a narcissist? That’s a good question, right?

It’s hard to know which way is up when you’re in survival mode, and then even as things start to calm down in life, we can get so stuck in indecisiveness that we’re not really moving forward.

We’re living an ‘ok’ life…but are we growing? Are we progressing? Have we gone beyond just a feeling of basic safety into a place of actually being fulfilled and feeling secure in who we are?

If you’re not sure how to answer those questions, or if you feel stuck in a place of just ‘ok’ right now, you’re really gonna get a lot out of today’s episode.”

On today’s episode of the  Art That Overcomes podcast, I’m sharing four small steps you can take to start shifting out of confusion, indecisiveness, insecurity, and anxiety. There’s so much more in your control than you may feel at times. Listen as I walk you through how I’m using art to process some of my own emotions during this season.

22. The Power of Art as a Visual Record

“Something I love about being an artist and writer is that the work I create continues to exist long after I create it (whether in digital or physical form) and I can access it and reflect on it weeks, months, and years later. In this sense, it kind of has a life all its own. As I said…it exists. It is its own thing. I’ve supplied the thoughts, words, colors, emotions, and actions to make it come to life. I’ve taken the thoughts, words, colors, emotions and actions out of my body and brain and put them onto another surface, or into my computer hard drive or Google doc. Then…I let them exist…and, I choose when and how I interact with them.”

On today’s episode of the  Art That Overcomes podcast, I’m reflecting on the past, staying grounded in the present, and looking toward the future. Listen in as I share how my art process is helping me do all three.

Above you can view the art images that I discuss in Episode 22: The Power of Art as a Visual Record.

Today’s message from your future self is all about tackling our fear of the unknown territory that lies ahead on this healing journey from narcissistic abuse.

20. Why I Don’t Like New Year’s Resolutions, and What to do Instead (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I think we all know by now that it’s more common for our January goals to plummet face first into a pile of ice cream and Netflix in our jammies by week three, than it is for them to actually come to realization.

From my perspective, there are 3 main reasons for this (and they’re all related):

First, we set our sights too high. We have a vision for where we want to be in life, and we have the lofty idea that we can get there quickly, all because it’s January for goodness sake! This is when new things start to happen! (in spite of the fact that we have no personal evidence to back up this belief)

Second, we assume we can get there without tremendous struggle. It’s easy to look at others who seem to have achieved all that we want for ourselves, and to think that it was just a matter of will-power and one fateful decision of “I am doing this now!” that got them there. While this is a great place to start, it’s hardly all that it will take to reach your goal or resolution.

Third, we think that once we get there, we will no longer struggle. I have coaching and therapy clients who want to be where they think I am. They see a strong, independent, confident, creative business owner and single mom who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and is using her experience with abuse to help other women. All of these things are true about me. But it’s also true that I struggle to manage finances, suffer from fatigue, migraines and food sensitivities, and regularly become angry and depleted after managing my motherly and co-parenting duties. Reaching our initial destination does not mean we have reached paradise. This healing journey is ongoing and, as I’ve said many times before, I think that’s the exciting part. It means that you will always struggle in one way or another, but it also means your potential for growth is limitless.

In light of all this, why don’t we reframe this New Year’s resolution business….

The holiday season is coming to an end. Most of us are back to our regular schedules of work, school, and parenting. So, this is as good a time as any to start something new. But what your Future Self wants to remind you of today is that there’s nothing magical about January. You can start fresh on any day, at any moment. So let’s get the ball rolling now, shall we?

19. Go Ahead, Feel It (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

Hey there, Overcomer.

I hope you were able to listen to the last podcast episode, and really give yourself space to feel and honor your loneliness. The purpose isn’t to dwell on difficult things. But rather, we want to allow ourselves space to feel, without judgment. You’ve been judged for being human long enough, am I right?

We are going to dig into this even deeper today. Your Future Self has a perspective shift to offer. She has a healthy level of control over her feelings now, and can’t wait for you to join her.

Let’s hear from her now, on today’s Art That Overcomes podcast episode.

18. Loneliness (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

Welcome back! Today we’re diving into the topic of loneliness.

The feeling of Loneliness is one of the heaviest burdens that survivors of narcissistic abuse must bear, especially around the holidays. Isn’t it bizarre how you can (at times) miss shared moments and family meals with a person who was also so manipulative, abusive, and unfaithful?

It’s strange, for sure. But…it’s normal.

You’re a good and kind person, who had real feelings for them. You invested so much in the relationship. And there really were some good times. Those memories are now clouded by your awareness of the gaslighting and betrayal…but still… the feelings are mixed.

Your Future Self is now on the other side of this. She has bravely allowed herself to feel her loneliness, sadness and grief. She feels secure and confident both as a single woman, and in new relationships. She does not waver.

Let’s hear from her now, on today’s Art That Overcomes podcast episode.

17. You Deserve a Quiet Moment (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

Whether you find yourself alone today, or amid the hustle and bustle of many holiday activities, it is likely hard to settle your mind into a truly centered, quiet moment within. It takes a little work to make this happen, and today I challenge you to put in that work. Remember, it’s YOU who’s leading the way, getting yourself to where you want to be in life.

Let’s hear what your Future Self wants you to know about the importance of taking this quiet moment…

A Message From Your Future Self

“I am here now. I am HERE. Right now. Within you…in your spirit, your heart, your breath. All the strength and power and confidence and ease that you hope for in the future……… All of this (and more) exists in you now, in this moment.

I am here now.

You created me.
You designed me.
You rose from the ashes of abuse and pain and a life of…”

16. You’re Allowed to Start Anew (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

I hope you were able to tap into a little bit of your power, strength and confidence as you heard the message from your future self in the last episode of Art That Overcomes podcast. Today we’re going to build on this topic, as we consider how much control you have, even when it doesn’t feel like you have it.

We are going to talk about…

New Traditions

Part of the fallout of separation and divorce is the loss of family traditions. If you and your partner were together for any length of time, and especially if you share children, then you developed many daily rhythms of life unique to your family, as well as favorite ways of celebrating each holiday.

Whether those traditions were big or small, they were all yours. And now that your family structure and dynamics are different, transitioning into new rhythms and traditions can be a challenge. Even if you want to leave the old stuff behind because it’s now tainted with the flavor of abuse and manipulation, starting anew can feel daunting. And I think a big part of why it feels this way is that after surviving narcissistic abuse, our brains often try to keep us stuck in victim-mode and we aren’t always aware of how much control we actually have now.

It takes some time and effort to change our thinking and enjoy stepping into new, open-ended adventures. Your Future Self is already there, fully confident and in control. Let her voice be your guide…

Listen in to hear what your Future Self has to tell you today….

15. Speaking YOUR Truth (SPECIAL HOLIDAY SERIES)

Welcome back to this special Art That Overcomes podcast series, designed to help you through this holiday season. I know you may be navigating difficult family and co-parenting relationships, grief & loss, loneliness, and trauma triggers galore. If you missed the last few episodes, I encourage you to go back and listen.

Today, let’s talk about the feeling that you have to be fake for the sake of others….

I think one of the most difficult things for survivors of narcissistic abuse to navigate is feeling like we must continue to silence our voice, even once we’re free from the abuse. There’s often pressure to put on a fake happy face for others, especially around the holidays. We want to keep the peace and make everyone else more comfortable, and we know that they just want to believe the lie that we’re completely okay.

But is it always necessary to worry about others before ourselves in this way?

I would argue that it’s not.

Now, this is certainly a complicated issue. When it comes to children, for example, we don’t want to pull them into all of the drama going on in our hearts.

But is there a place for a little bit of honesty mixed with the holiday ‘cheer’?

Listen in to hear what your Future Self has to tell you today….
